Yay! :/ [Sep. 1st, 2009|12:21 pm]
I've finally gotten to the point where if I don't wear a belt, my pants fall off.  Honestly... they last about 3 steps.  And these are new ones I bought at the beginning of July.

This is sort of a nice predicament to have.  But mildly annoying with the prospect of having to buy new clothes.  (The last couple of weeks have been unexpectedly expensive)

I've plateaued in my weight loss at about 240 lbs., but the muscle I have been gaining from skating and such has been displacing the fat very nicely.  I'm starting to get some nice definition in the legs and I'm feeling a difference in the muscle mass and strength in my core.  Now to start working more on the chest, arms and shoulders.

Come skate with me.  You'd be surprised how effective it is.

Need a cheap dentist [Aug. 10th, 2009|03:20 pm]
[Current Mood |in pain]

I think I really need to take care of this!

The headache the other day may have been brought on by some teeth problems.  I had 3 of 4 wisdom teeth taken out about 12 years ago.  They left one in place.  It is finally causing some problems.

It's been kicking off a little with this summers occasional sinus problems and I had hoped it would just be that.  But it's started to occur more often.

I don't have insurance and can't afford a lot.

Anyone got any suggestions or comments about dental clinics in the Seattle area for getting a tooth or two removed from my head?

Thanks.

Stupid bit of fat on my shoulders! [Aug. 9th, 2009|06:47 am]
Well, I had originally planned on going out for a bit tonight, but my head had other plans.

I left work a little early because I had a bit of a head-ache. A bit being that it was on the slightly big side and it was making me grumpy and not fun to deal with.

But rather than head straight home like I knew I should, I decided to run the errands that I had originally planned to do. Bad idea.

By the time I made it back to my sweeties, it was full blown. So it took a couple of Aleve and tried to lay down. Finding a comfortable position was about impossible.

It stuck with me long enough, that I eventually found myself in the bathroom being sick.

Not fun at all!

Throwing up usually causes head pressure and pain. But a head-ache that causes enough pain to make you hurl, thereby creating more of the said pressure and pain?

I can do without that ever again! Thank you very much!

Tonights food expiriment... [May. 10th, 2009|05:20 am]
[Tags|]

Pan seared tuna with a bit of fresh salsa.

The salsa was made with a small yellow tomato, a little red pepper, some shallots and a touch of lemon juice. Then sprinkled with a bit of salt and pepper and let sit.

Then in a hot skillet with a touch of olive oil, I put in a little of the salsa to flavor the pan, and then did 60 seconds each side on a couple of 1 inch tuna steaks. Just enough to sear them on the outside but left them a bit pink inside.

It was good, but I think I'll season the tuna a little next time and maybe increase the time to cook by 30 seconds each side.

Ouch [Apr. 21st, 2009|10:23 am]

Last night, as a newer person, I was pulled aside with a couple of others to practice falling.

Yep. Falling on skates! On purpose!

Onto one knee. Onto two knee's. Onto one knee with a slide turn. Onto two knee's with a forearm catch. And finally baseball slides.

Baseball slides kind of suck. Unlike in actual baseball, you down leg should not end up under your butt, but rather behind your forward knee. Landing on a roller skate hurts.

Also, A man of my size makes a lot of racket when a controlled fall fails, and my ass lands hard. I swear the floor vibrated for a good 8 seconds! Although, that might have been my spine.

And in 2 uses, I have ruined my new skates! :/

Doing a controlled knee slide results in you pointing your toes, and the top and toe of the skate rubs along the floor.

At one point, I looked down and excplaimed "That's my toe nail!". I burned a hole through the toe of my left skate big enough that I could see my toe. Which means I had also ruined my new socks with the skeletons on them! And a set of laces!

Alright, that means I get to play with some leather. Gonna pull out the tools and fashion me some custom tooled toe covers.

And I hurt all over. But no photograph-able bruising yet. But give me time... it will happen.

:D

Mental Shifts [Apr. 20th, 2009|01:58 am]
[Current Mood | happy]

I haven't watched TV in about 3 weeks. I've watched a couple of DVD's on the TV, and on at least one occassion, it's been on in the background.

And this is a little different for me. I haven't seen any of Heroes this season, and I've only caught one episode of BSG. Nevermind my addictions to CSI, Law and Order, and a miriad of others that it surprises me I can't remember their names at the moment.

I came to this realization a little while ago when I was a touch bored and started looking for things to do. So I started some laundry, did dishes, made coffee, cleaned up the kitchen, and boiled my mouth gaurd for Derby.

I'm not at home, so there are a limited number of things I can do to entertain myself.

I'm thinking of going downstairs and re-organizing her clothes closet. Besides the time it will take to do it, the entertainment should last for days. "Hello Honey! I re-organized all your clothes by color and naughtiness factor!".

Hehe. ;)

Nah! Maybe I'll get out my skates and tune the wheels. They felt a little sloppy on Wednesday.

:D

Need a "Derby" name!!!! [Apr. 16th, 2009|09:45 am]
[Tags|]
[Current Mood | sore]

Alright, help me out here!

I've been going and watching practices for a couple of weeks now. At first they just thought I was some stalker until I explained that I was dating one and had fathered another on the team. Then they just thought I was weird.

Which apparently appealed, because the coaches kept asking when I was going to put on skates. ;)

So the other night, we went to an open skate at a rink up north and I rented skates to see if I still could. It has been about 22 years since I've been on roller skates. It wasn't too bad, and I only fell once taking out another skater in the process. So it was a win-win! :)

So last night, we shot up to Fast Girl Skate (the local derby store in Wallingford) and I picked up some inexpensive skates and joined practice last night. I'm a little banged up today!

But I kept getting asked what my Derby name was and I didn't have an answer. So at one point, one of the coaches called me "Papa", and both "Honey" and "Rocker" where pretty much immediately disgusted and I heard an almost simultaneous "Noooo!" from 2 different places around the rink.

Apparently, neither of my girls want to hear me being called "Papa". Who knew?

So I need help coming up with a Derby Name. If you need ideas, some of the existing folks are up on they're website at www.sistersofslant.com

Come on, help a brother out!

Experimental Cooking - Bananas [Apr. 15th, 2009|06:36 am]
[Tags|]

So, did the bananas I had threatened.

Pan fried them in a little mint olive oil and then dusted with a touch of cinnamon. Then splashed them with tequila and covered.

They where good. But next time...

Going to try with butter. But I liked the light mint flavor, so maybe saute some mint leaves in the butter before adding the bananas. And larger babanas, maybe chilled in the fridge for a bit do they have time to brown a little before the start to soften too much.

And of course, more tequila!

But be warned, splashing tequila into a pan of hot oil is kind of scary! The cats ran from the noise! Have a lid ready!

Apples could be nice too, but I'm thinking nutmeg and whiskey!

Experimental Cooking [Apr. 14th, 2009|12:42 pm]
[Tags|]

So I've started to cook more again, but I've never been one for using cookbooks.

So instead, I do a lot of culinary experiments. Nothing terribly off the wall, but I like to use different spices and sauces sometimes.

Last nights menu:

Pan seared asparagus with a bit of clover honey.

Pan fried Talapia with powdered ginger, cinnimon, oregano, and a touch of sea salt.

Butterflyed prawns sauteed in butter with pepper-corns, cloves, cinnimon and sage.

The asparagus was tasty, and I will definately do that again.
I think the Talapia would have worked better if the spices had been more of a thicker rub, rather than just a dusting. Maybe baked. It wasn't bad, it just wasn't quite what I was hoping for.
The prawns could have benefitted from using more of the spices for a little stronger flavor.

Tonight might involve Tequila fried banana's for desert. And I'm thinking that this orange/pinapple juice I have would work well as a reduction for a future prawn experiment.

So a question I have for you... who else likes to do experimental cooking? I'm thinking about maybe having a social night at some point and involve some non-standard foods and epicurian atrocities.

Going away! [Apr. 2nd, 2009|07:04 pm]
[Current Mood | excited]

Going away for a long weekend.

Me and my girl are going to pack up and head out to the coast in Greyland, Washington. It's going to be a wonderful time of just the two of us in a cabin near the beach and very limited technology.

We may not even have cell coverage. :)

We may take a laptop for it's DVD capabilities. Cause my ability to remain entertaining is limited to about 60 hours at a stretch. So a movie or two may be in order. We'll see.

Otherwise it will just be each other in overcast damp weather in a small cabin near the beach.

It's going to be wonderful!

So, won't be out this weekend!

Have fun without me, cause I'm going to have my fun without you this time!

:)

Cool Burner Art in Burien [Mar. 6th, 2009|11:43 am]
[Tags|]

While on the bus on my way to work this morning, we passed what was a construction site a couple of weeks ago.

It has been converted into the Burien Interim Art Space and has been filled with a lot of really cool steel sculptures.  I found they're website here.

I'm bummed I missed the opening night.  The lit them on fire!  But I am hoping they may have regularly scheduled flame ups, and I may be able to go view again.

It does appear to be a temporary installation.  So if it floats your boat, get there before it's gone!
